American Buyers

Information for American Buyers

To take a horse over the border the horse needs a coggins and have health papers done. These health papers must then be approved by the federal vet. When the horse crosses the border a broker is needed to get the horse through Customs. Because it would be a lot for an American buyer to go through all this we get everything ready and take the horse over the border into the USA at either Port Huron, Michigan or Lewiston, New York. Although this might sound complicated we do everything, and all the buyer has to do is meet us on the American side of the border at one of those two locations – we load their horse in their trailer and they’re good to go. The total cost for everything is $1000 (this includes the coggins, health papers, federal vet, brokerage and trucking across the border).

Something else to keep in mind is that the American dollar is usually worth more than the Canadian dollar so that’s a savings for US buyers. Our horses and the $1000 are priced in Canadian funds. So for example, if we had a horse for sale worth $7000 and the American dollar was worth 25% more than the Canadian dollar it would work out as follows –

The horse ($7000) plus $1000 for border work and delivery to the USA brings the cost to $8000 Canadian dollars. Then take off 25% because of the exchange difference on the money and the horse that was priced at $7000 Canadian dollars ends up costing $6000 American dollars (and that’s with it delivered across the border and everything taken care of).

If you can’t arrange to pick up your new horse at the border there are some truckers that can haul directly or close to you.

THIS MIGHT SOUND COMPLICATED BUT WE DO WANT TO EMPHASIZE THAT WE DO LOOK AFTER EVERYTHING. THE ONLY THING YOU DO IS PICK UP YOUR HORSE ON THE AMERICAN SIDE OF THE BORDER.

Thank you for your interest in our horses.
